Give up his job, flat and routine – just like that? Merely to ride with 40 kg of luggage for more than two years around
South America?
With stunning images and moving words André Schumacher presents his adventures of an unusual journey, taking the audience into a
world of impressions which are hard to forget. The endless vastness of Patagonia and the shimmering density of South American cities.
The wealth of ancient cultures and the poverty of the people today. Gruelling heat in the Amazon and snow storms deep in the Andes.
Encounters with extraordinary people, but also complete solitude. Indescribable strain and moments of greatest happiness.
The trip is South American through and through – full of hardship and humour, driven by miracles and small catastrophes,
improvisations – but always imbued with the irrepressible joy of life: the adventurers cycle through Bolivia during the summer
of 2005, as burning tires block the roads – while in La Paz, dynamite flies through the streets. They heave their bikes with
tears in their eyes above 5,000 metre-high mountain passes. They run a hostel in the mountains and get lost in the Andes during a
storm.
“South America” is more than a travelogue. It’s a homage to a way of life – a quest for the slowest way of travel on
impassable paths. A search for the simple life and for answers to questions nobody in our fast-track society asks any longer. It’s
a search for the richness of life!
